Food Hygiene Regulations

Food Hygiene & Safety Regulations in the UK – Make sure you know food hygiene law

Did you know that 5.5 million people get food poisoning every year? And 76% of those cases are thought to be as a result of eating out? Don’t be a caterer that causes food poisoning. The best place to start? Understanding food hygiene regulations.

What does the law say?

There are a few very important pieces of legislation that cover food hygiene regulations, like the Food Safety Act (1990) and the Food Law Code of Practice (2012). But as a mobile caterer you’ve probably got enough on your plate to be able to trawl through those documents (doesn’t hurt if you do want to though!).

Here’s the most essential information you need to know on the food hygiene regulations front:

  1. You must register your food preparation premises with the local Environmental Health Office – that’s the EH department local to the area where your unit is stored if you’re a mobile caterer – at least 28 days prior to trading.
  2. Anyone in your business will come into contact with food has to be trained to an appropriate level for the job they’re doing before you can let them work. (If you’re not sure which members of staff need what training, use this course selector to work it out.)
  3. You must create and consistently use a documented food safety management system based on HACCP principles. HACCP is very important, you can learn all about it with this training course.
